Lucy O'Brien Joins LMA as Musical Director

LMA is thrilled to announce the addition of Lucy O’Brien to our growing roster of teacher talent.
Lucy will be the Musical Director for Andrew Strano‘s, Musical Improv class at LMA Melbourne starting in Term 1, 2017.

Musical improv has to be the most joyous, exciting, immediate way to get involved with music theatre, and I love being a part of the worlds that are created by our students. It’s fantastic to be hosted by LMA this term, and being a part of their vision to teach comedy. I can’t wait to get started with fresh faces to create something truly special. It’s also fantastic I’m not doing this alone, as it wouldn’t be the same without the amazing Andrew Strano directing and guiding us. He’s knowledgeable, passionate and wears a snazzy jacket with flair! I’m looking forward to getting started, offering insight and support to everyone who wants to give musical improv a go.

When not improvising piano for Original Cast: The Completely Improvised Musical, Lucy works as a Musical Director, Arranger, and Pianist.

Most recently, Lucy was music director for Godspell Reimagined at the Melbourne Arts Centre, after an acclaimed season at the Sydney Opera House earlier this year. The show has also toured regional Victoria and next year will be showing in the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne.

Earlier this year, she music directed Flourish Production’s Sing On Through Tomorrow, (Melbourne Cabaret Festival), a song cycle of the work of Matthew Lee Robinson, Company (Watch This Productions, fortyfivedownstairs, 2015, and Victorian Regional Tour, 2016), and Women on Fire: Menopause the Musical (national tour). She has previously music directed Flourish Productions’ The Songs of Alan Menken, (Toff in Town, Chapel Off Chapel) and The Songs of Cy Coleman (Bennett’s Lane).

She has arranged for Meow Meow’s The Little Mermaid (Malthouse Theatre 2016), new musical The Gathering (fortyfivedownstairs, 2016), Carole King: The Songbook of Her Life (national tour, 2016), and In the Heights (StageArt).
Recent keys credits include Painted from Memory (Melbourne Recital Centre), Morning Melodies, (Arts Centre) and Spelling Bee (Vic Theatre Company). Her own musical theatre pieces include Millionaire (fortyfivedownstairs, 2014) and Devoted (Midsumma, 2014).

In 2017, Lucy will travel to the USA to undertake the widely respected Music Directing Intensive at Goodspeed Musicals. She earned a coveted Besen Placement on Timeshare (Lally Katz, Malthouse Theatre) in 2015 after graduating from the VCA (BFA Interactive Composition). Lucy also has been teaching for Stage School Australia since 2011, including music directing their productions of Seussical (2012), The Conference of the Birds (2012, 2015), and The Secret Garden (2016).
